Finnish technology company Moiva is expanding its operations to Japan. For a care technology company, Japan is a market where the changes brought by an aging population and the structural problems of elderly care need to be solved today. In Japan's Akita Prefecture, more than 40% of the population is already elderly.
Moiva, a technology company specializing in AI development for care, is expanding its business and opening an office in Japan. The company already has several pilot projects underway in Japan, and is now beginning cooperation in the Akita region, where the population is aging faster than anywhere else in the world. The Finnish company's AI-assisted voice documentation and data platform will be introduced and tested in elderly care in Akita, in cooperation with Akita Prefecture and the care-sector company Akita Sousei Management.
"Japan is a strategically important market for us. It is already grappling with questions related to population aging, the availability of care-sector labor, and other structural problems. The same issues are increasingly emerging in Finland and elsewhere in Europe, and they must be solved with the help of technology. We want to build a long-term business in Japan while also learning from a market that is, in many ways, at the forefront of the future of care," says Moiva CEO Tero Salminen.
Japan has the world's second-oldest population after Monaco. Akita Prefecture is a region of about 900,000 residents with the oldest population structure in the country. More than 40% of Akita's residents are already 65 or older, and the proportion of residents under 15 is the lowest in the country, at only about 9%. According to forecasts, the share of the population aged 65 and over will rise to nearly 50% by 2045. At the same time, forecasts indicate that one in four elderly people will have dementia.
"We have been impressed by how actively and open-mindedly Akita is seeking new solutions to the challenges of care. Our cooperation with Akita Prefecture and Akita Sousei Management has been smooth and practical from the very start. It is important to us that the technology is not simply brought to the Japanese market, but developed together with local experts to meet the real needs of Japanese care work," Salminen says.
In Akita, the care sector is being developed jointly, with Moiva providing AI solutions and Akita Sousei Management contributing local expertise on the challenges of the care and wellbeing sector. Moiva's goal is to become the leading partner in elderly care in Japan as well. The principle stays the same: technology needs to adapt to care work, not care workers to technology.
Moiva separated from Efima at the beginning of September 2026 to become an independent care technology company. The company's AI-assisted voice documentation has been studied in research led by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, and the results showed significant improvements in the work of care professionals. Among other things, time was freed up from reporting for face-to-face interaction with people, and professionals in the field felt that the technology eased their daily work.
As part of Moiva's expansion into Japan and the start of this international cooperation, the Governor of Akita Prefecture, Kenta Suzuki, and executives from Akita Sousei Management are visiting Finland on 19–22 October.
The memorandum of understanding was signed in Helsinki on 21 October by Moiva CEO Tero Salminen, Governor of Akita Prefecture Kenta Suzuki, and Akita Sousei Management CEO Shoichi Awano.
